Washington, DC
Washington, D.C. is the United States Capital. It is on the banks of the Potomac River and surrounded by Virginia and Maryland. It was originally named after George Washington. The District of Columbia was founded on July 16, 1790 and is a federal district. Colombia is a reference to Christopher Columbus. Washington, D.C. is home to all three federal branches of the United States government. The city is a popular destination for many tourists because of the national monuments, and landmarks and the largest museum complex including other performing arts centers and institutions.

Within the cities district lays the Smithsonian Institution that is a collection of many free museums.
